Past or Present: The "memory as a site of reconstruction" Archives

Mixed Jamaican girl in her house, 2026.

Documenting myself in my installation,  "memory as a site of reconstruction," I situate myself not only as an ancestor but as a reflection of their descendants. I am referencing images taken during colonial times to exoticize enslaved Africans and Indian indentured servants for postcards. Specifically, those of them in front of deplorable barracks and slave quarters, their “homes”. I wanted to recreate these images as the person behind and in front of the camera. Documenting with care the home we built from this, filled with objects I made to represent our past and present identities.
